In my life this week…
I've discovered the Australian Homeschool Bloggers group.  It has been a great adventure meeting homeschool bloggers from Down Under.

It's been an intensely emotional week for me on a deeply personal level. If you think of me please pray for peace and His favour towards us.

In our home school this week…
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
  • Back to Recorder lessons for Sir N
  • Tennis on Thursdays
Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

My favourite thing this week was…
What’s working/not working for us…
  • YouTube schooling is so much fun!
Things I’m working on…

In Bloggy world I’m reading…
A lot more than listed here! I managed to loose all 90 open tabs. The moral of the story read them, record them and don't rely on browser tabs to maintain your list for you ...
I’m cooking…
I’m grateful for…
    • The DSLR I was given a few years ago.
A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
This is my favourite bible verse.  When I feel down I look to the heavens and remember that He is providentially caring for me.

"On the NAUTILUS men's hearts never fail them. No defects to be afraid of, for the double shell is as firm as iron, no rigging to attend to, no sails for the wind to carry away; no boilers to burst, no fire to fear, for the vessel is made of iron, not of wood; no cove to run short, for electricity is the only power; no collision to fear, for it alone swims in deep water; no tempest to brave, for when it dives below the water, it reaches absolute tranquility. That is the perfection of vessels."  - JULES VERNE

Welcome to my first post for the 2014/15 Poppins Book Nook blog hop.  Each month this year we will share resources for a book we have read for the month according to a theme.

This months theme is: Where in the World. We have spent a delightful month exploring the wonders of ocean living, submarines, animals of the oceans and discovered the delights of YouTube schooling.

Paul read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne to Sir N.  Our version was published by Readers Digest, with illustrations by Joseph Ciardiello and an afterword by Clifton Fadiman. This version was printed in 1990 and was translated by Philip Schuyler Allen from the original work by Jules Verne which was publishe in 1870 under the title Vingt Mille Liues Sous les Mers.

      Lap Book

We then enriched our experience with a few documentaries on YouTube as well as some DVD renditions of the book.

      Narwhal
      Nautilus
      Giant Squid
      Giant Clams
      Scuba Diving
20 000 Leagues Under the Sea

We really enjoyed our first month with the Poppins Book Nook and are looking forward to seeing the treasures shared by the ladies over the next 24 hours.  Be sure to come back next month to see our next adventure.  If you have any great resources for me to add to this list please post it below in the comments.

              Captivated DVD {Review}

I am so grateful to Media Talk 101 who have produced and  provided a copy of Captivated The Movie for me to review.

              What we received
              • I received the full length feature documentary Captivated in physical DVD format.
              • 107 minutes.
              • The extra's section of the DVD contains over two hours of extended interviews with each contributor in more detail.
              • There is an excellent interview with Philip Telfer from Media Talk 101 in which he shares more insight into: consumption, content, captivity, battleground and freedom.
              • I was impressed with the credentials of this documentary too.
              • Produced by Media Talk 101.

              How we used it
Paul and I viewed the DVD together at home and I was a little surprised at how quickly 107 minutes went by.

I was so impressed with what I had seen I invited four other couples over for an evening of coffee, cake and Captivated.  At first the group were a little hesitant with the DVD being nearly two hours long.  We watched an hour, took a coffee break and then watched the second half.  Everyone was very impressed with the quality of information presented and surprised that it was not difficult to watch. The group as a whole were excited and all wanted to borrow Captivated to watch and discuss with their children.

These words of one of the attendees sums up the general feel of the group "I thought it was very well done, interesting, thought provoking and quiet balanced.  There was no bagging of technology as such, but plenty of encouragement to thoughtfully assess your own involvement and seek to ensure that technology remains a tool rather than allowing it to control your life. We both were encouraged by watching it as well as by the following discussion within the group." - B

I have loaned it to my Pastor who has watched the first half with his young adult home group and the encouraged the group to go home and watch the on demand download of Captivated.

He is looking forward to showing it to our Men's bible study group in the near future.

              Some points that impacted me
              • The average person in the US watches 4.7 hours of TV a day.  That is 1704 hours a year which equals 71 days.
              • There are more TV's now per household than people.
              • The cyber age began with the invention of the telegraph.
              • Our problems with the techno age are over 100 years old.
              • "The moral importance of entertainment is something which has been universally recognized... a man may be judged by his standard of entertainment as easily as by the standard of his work." - Hollywood's Motion Picture production code in 1930 (Hollywood's Astonishing Production Code )
              • By giving high school students televisions, mobile phones, gaming consoles and computers in their rooms makes for a 24/7 social connectivity.  They are now growing up with one another as well as taking their cues from each another. This in turn empowers them to screen out adults thoroughly.  Watch what Mark Baurelein has to say about teens screening out adults.
I was particularly interested in what Dr Jeff Myers shared on Why are so Many Young Men Passive ? It's an interesting look into the impact of gaming on the brains of young people.  Brilliant.

There are  17 Vimeo clips from Captivated available online for you to watch.

              Would we change anything ?
I have really enjoyed the feature length documentary Captivated and would not change the content or presentation in any way.

I would love to have a half hour simplified version of Captivated to use with my primary school aged son in order for him to understand the impact of media and digital games in his own life.  It would be a great way to introduce media self management and lay a firm foundation for him about the why and would pave the way for us to talk about it without frustration and argument.

Captivated is full of amazing information that ironically has me wanting to read more online about the information presented.  I would love to have a PDF with reference notes and links to the information presented by each of the speakers.

I would also love a printable fill in the blank worksheet to use with high school aged students along with some topical questions for discussion after.

              What we thought
I really regret not having Captivated ten years ago.  I would have loved to be better equipped to make choices that in the long run would have been healthier for our family.  The no beating around the bush supply of information is excellent and well presented.

At first I thought that we would be hammered with an anti media agenda but was very pleasantly surprised with the smorgasbord of quality information that was not anti-media. It was presented by a multitude of speakers from many walks of life.

For me personally I don't need another anti-media indoctrination, I've had more of those than I can count.  I live in a media saturated society and feel I am in need of better information that will equip me with ways of managing it appropriately as well as equip my children with the skill sets they need in order to manage their own lives in a media saturated world and Captivated has done that for me.

Captivated has equipped me with the information I need in order to make appropriate choices for myself and my younger son.  It has given my husband and I a level playing field in order to discuss and implement for ourselves and our family a way to move forward in our home.

I am impressed with how this DVD tackles the issue of our unimpeded zeal in relation to our techno world.  I appreciate the quality of the evidence presented in relation to the possible effects of the current choices we are making and the effect these choices are having on our selves physically, mentally, emotionally and most importantly spiritually by not using discretion in our daily choices.

I am very grateful for the gift of Captivated and will be sharing this DVD to anyone wanting to borrow it. It's message is timely and encouraging and most importantly it is equipping.

I highly recommend this DVD to every family out there who are looking for more information on how to manage the techno world out there.

Through Captivated I was exhorted to "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" Colossians 2:8

              Blessings

Last year I shared with you my Homeschool for FREE list and then updated it in January this year.  I have been feeling a little frustrated with it's length and it's been difficult to find the information I want in it so this week I will be sharing shorter lists divided into subject areas.

With the advent of the internet and the generosity of many homeschool mothers there are some amazing resources available for us today.

One of my all time favourite bible verses is And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs and tokens [of God’s provident care], and [to mark] seasons, days, Genesis 1:14. I love this verse because it speaks about how the Lord placed in the heavens signs for us to know He cares.  It does not matter where in the world you are, all you need to do is look at the heavens any time of the day and you will see the depth and breadth of His love and care for you. One of the most frustrating things however is the study of the heavens as most of the information available today is full of secular information and does not point to the designer and creator of it all.  I am so excited about Star Chronicles: A Bible-Based Study of the Stars written and compiled by Dawnita Fogleman.

We have been studying Ancient History this year and I have been searching for a book to learn more about the stars in our night sky one that did not contain information on astrology, horoscopes or the zodiac. Star Chronicles: A Bible-Based Study of the Stars filled this requirement for me.

                         How we used this book
I received a PDF version of the book which I downloaded to my computer and transferred to my Galaxy Tab.  I printed off the star charts and notebooking pages which are all neatly together in a handy section at the back of the book.  I have stored these in a folder for use as we study each constellation.

Next I took some time to read Dawnita's introduction and the first chapter.  I was very impressed with all the amazing historical and biblical information in each chapter.  In fact I was so excited that I sat down the next day and read this information out loud to Sir N.  Some of it was a little difficult for him to grasp as he is only eight years old.  I then gave him the colouring in sheet to colour.

I have now adapted how I use the book.  I read the chapter myself and give Sir N a summarised version of information.  I think he senses how excited I am to be able to share with him the story of God in the heavens and just how much God has put in the heavens for us to know about Himself both now, in the past and in the future.

Each constellation is introduced with a star chart with accompanying supporting constellations.  You are then given a word study on the name of the constellation followed by some historical and biblical information.  All scriptures are fully quoted.

Each of the stars in the chart are introduced and explained in relation to the scriptures.

The stars are referenced to Old Testament and New Testament information.

The constellations covered in the book are:
                        1. Virgin and Bride (Virgo)
                        2. Justice & Balance (Libra)
                        3. Sting of Death (Scorpio)
                        4. Archer (Sagittarius)
                        5. Goat (Capricorn)
                        6. Water Bearer (Aquarius)
                        7. Fish (Pisces)
                        8. The Lamb (Aries)
                        9. A Bull (Taurus)
                        10. Twins (Gemini)
                        11. Resurrection (Cancer)
                        12. Lion (Leo)
There are suggested resources for further study followed by notebooking and colouring pages at the end. You can view sample pages over at Dawnita's blog.

Over all I'm enjoying this book and look forward to using it again when Sir N is in the highschool years.  It would make a great bible study tool too. Thank you to Dawnita for giving me the opportunity to share about your book and for the PDF to use with my family.

This book is beautifully illustrated.  The words are the lyrics from a song by John Schumann and sung by the Australian group Redgum  (Album: Caught In The Act).  It took him 15 minutes to compose and is a tribute to the men and woman of Australia who fought in the Vietnam War. The illustrations are beautiful and take you on the journey with a Grandfather as he shares his memories of being Only 19.

                                Lunar Eclipse Melbourne {15 April 2014 - Blood Moon}

I've had a long standing delight in witnessing solar and lunar eclipses.  It all started in 2011 when we got up at some crazy hour in the morning to see Lunar Eclipse {16 June 2011} this in turn started a quest to know when the next Solar eclipse in Australia would be.  This resulted in our journey to Queensland in 2012 during which time we experienced a total Solar Eclipse. Last year we took a trip to Ballarat to see the Annular Solar Eclipse {10 May 2013}. Today we had the privilege of witnessing a lunar eclipse at sunset over the bay in Melbourne.

To start the evening the sun painted the most spectacular sunset behind us

We were disappointed as we gazed out over Port Philip Bay in Melbourne as there was a large bank of clouds across the bay. But still we hoped that the prevailing wind would clear it in time for us to see the Blood Moon. Paul and Sir N set up their camera's on tripods and I scanned the horizon using my phone app The Night Sky.
There's the moon just below the horizon

Preparing to capture the Blood Moon

We waited patiently and then all of a sudden there before us. Unfortunately not very clear due to the cloud cover.

Blood Moon with Mars to the left and Melbourne lights below over Port Philip Bay

We watched for another hour as the red faded and was replaced by the suns rays of light reflected back at us.

The Blood Moon is fading as the moon reflection returns

                                Almost half way back

                                Just over half way

                                Three quarters back

                                Just a smidgen to go

The moon in her full glory reigning over the night sky

Here are two of Sir N's captures

                                In my life this week…
I really enjoyed this very funny YouTube clip of an April Fools prank played on a professor by his highschool class this year.  If you need a good laugh be sure to pop on over and watch it.

We had a wonderful week this week.  It's so good to be blowing the dust off my DSLR :) On Tuesday evening we took a drive down to the ocean front near our home in Melbourne to see the total lunar eclipse showing a blood moon.  Unfortunately the wind was blowing and we couldn't stabilize our camera's but it was good to see and take some photographs.

A crown of thorns placed on His head
He knew that He would soon be dead
He said did you forget me Father did you?
They nailed Him to a wooden cross
Soon all the world would feel the loss
Of Christ the King before His Hallelujah

                                      Hallelujah x4

He hung His head and prepared to die
Then lifted His face up to the sky
Said I am coming home now Father to you
A reed which held His final sip
Was gently lifted to his lips
He drank His last and gave His soul to glory

                                      Hallelujah x4

The soldier who had used his sword
To pierce the body of our Lord
Said truly this is Jesus Christ our Savior
He looked with fear upon his sword
Then turned to face his Christ and Lord
Fell to his knees crying Hallelujah

                                      Hallelujah x4

Took from his head the thorny crown
And wrapped him in a linen gown
And laid him down to rest inside the tomb
The holes in his hands, his feet and side
Now in our hearts we know he died
To save us from ourselves oh hallelujah

                                      Hallelujah x4

Three days went by again they came
To move the stone to bless the slain
With oil and spice anointing hallelujah
But as they went to move the stone
They saw that they were not alone
But Jesus Christ has risen Hallelujah
