  • Available from: Scholastic, Book Depository
This book is beautifully written and illustrated.  It's a definite treasure to read and add to your library shelves. It's a twaddle free story of two Australian mates Bluey and Dusty. We follow their friendship and journey from joining the defense force, being deployed at Gallipoli and their experiences of living, working and fighting in World War I and then finally returning home to Australia.

The illustrations contribute to the depth and meaning of the story.  Sir N loves this book and has asked me to read it to him again which is always a good sign of a twaddle free book. This is an excellent book to introduce young children to the reality of Gallipoli and the reality of the World War.

Philippians in 28 Weeks {Review}

I've always admired people who memorize complete chapters or books of the bible and wondered how they do it.

For me scripture memorization work has always been difficult.  I hate to learn things by route it's always just been in the to hard basket. This however has never diminished my desire to memorize chapters or books of the bible.  Recently Home School Adventure Co offered us the opportunity to study and memorize the book of Philippians in 28 Weeks.

What we received
We were given Philippians in 28 Weeks ESV eBook version.

The book contains: the story behind memorizing the book of Philippians in 28 weeks, instructions on how to use the program, Chapter 1 - 4, Chapter 1-4 review, the log, the cards and about the author.  There are a number of suggestions on how to use the book and the steps to memorize the book of Philippians are explained in the instructions in the front of the book.

How we used it
I printed two copies of the eBook one double sided for me and one single sided for Sir N.  Having the pages single sided made it much easier for him to do the copy work of each scripture and the fill in notebook pages. I took it to Office Works and had it bound to keep the pages together in one neat book.

We also printed the scripture memory cards and laminated them for durability.

The principle behind the program is summed up in five basic steps
  1. Read
  2. Record
  3. Repeat
  4. Review
  5. Recite
The recommended pace is to memorize approximately one new verse a day for six days and then recap the verses already learned.  We had every intention of maintaining this rhythm but soon discovered it was not working for us and becoming a chore rather than a joy.  We have since slowed down and are enjoying it much more.

Whenever we start a new verse to memorize we write out the verse in our journal using the copywork page.  Having the scripture already there on the page made it so much easier for Sir N to write and copy.

Sir N copy work

Every six days the journal contains a reflection area where there are specific questions relating to the scriptures you have learned as well as a page to note the insights you have gained from reading through the book of Philippians during the week. These questions are a wonderful tool in helping with your meditation upon the word.  I'm looking forward to seeing what I have learned in the weeks to come as we move through our journey of becomeing a walking epistle once we know the book of Philippians.

Cost of Philipians in 28 Weeks
  • ESV / KJV** Complete print edition $28.95
  • ESV* Complete eBook edition $14.95
  • Philippians memory cards $9.95

What we thought
If you want to become a walking epistle then Philippians in 28 Weeks is for you.

Spending time in one book of the bible is helping us to better understand and grasp the Word and become better acquainted with it's meaning and more importantly it's application to our lives. The more we memorize the more scripture is permeating our daily living.  I am looking forward to completing this memory challenge and becoming more importantly a living epistle of our Lord and Saviour.

I do hope that Home School Adventure Co produce more books of the bible to memorize in this format.

Blessings

This Week
Ever since we discovered a cartoon tutorial on The Lorax DVD we have been diligently checking out all the extra features on our children's DVD's.  So far we have learned to draw The Lorax and Turbo.  Last week we borrowed a blue ray version of The Croods and learned how to draw a Mousephant and Macawnivore. These tutorials are only available on the Blue-ray version.

I discovered that DreamWorks Animation have uploaded 8 drawing tutorials for The Croods on YouTube. The Mousephant and Macawnivore are not on this playlist.

ANZAC Day - an Ode to the Fallen

$

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children
England mourns for her dead across the sea,
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again,
They sit no more at familiar tables of home,
They have no lot in our labour of the daytime,
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires and hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the night.

As the stars shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain,
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

I found this write up about this poem over at ANZAC Day"The Ode comes from For the Fallen, a poem by the English poet and writer Laurence Binyon and was published in London in The Winnowing Fan: Poems of the Great War in 1914. This verse, which became the Ode for the Returned and Services League, has been used in association with commemoration services in Australia since 1921."

Mr Holling is a master story teller that grabbed our imagination from the very first page, so much so that this month we have spent a delightful time exploring the history of shipping from sailing ships to modern container ships that roam our oceans.

We found some excellent FREE resources online and have watched a few documentaries on YouTube as well.  Seabird introduced us to the wide world of shipping and encouraged an inquiry into the different types of ships through the ages.  We read Ships, Sailors and the Sea alongside Seabird.

I just love a good find at the library and this is one of those finds.  This book is both beautifully written and illustrated.  It is good quality twaddle free Australian history.  It tells the historical journey of Douglas Mawson down in the Antarctic and his fight for survival giving the reader a deeper appreciation for the beautiful wild Antarctic and why the Australian base is called Mawson base.  If you are studying the geography and history of the Antarctic I highly recommend this beautiful book.

      The Brinkman Adventures Season 2 {Review}

      $

Have you heard of The Brinkman Adventures? Neither had I until Brinkman Adventures asked the crew to please review The Brinkman Adventures Season 2: Episodes 13-24. We are officially hooked!  Wow!

The Brinkman Adventures are the result of a vision and idea the Lord gave to Ian Bultman one day when he was away on a prayer retreat.

The vision was to create radio quality dramatizations retelling actual modern day missionary stories using the day to day lives of his own family (there are 9 children in his family).   Each of the children's names have been changed in the production but they all play themselves.

The aim of the series is one of changing lives and encouraging young people to become missionaries.

      What we received
      • We received the complete iTunes download version of Season 2 of the Brinkman Adventures containing 12 episodes.
      • Each of the 12 episodes is 26 minutes long.
      • The file arrived in a 530MB zipped folder this unzipped into 26 files in one folder (576 MB).
      • There was over five hours of listening fun.

      How we used it
After downloading and unzipping the folder I imported them into iTunes and burnt them to four CD's. As soon as the first one was ready we decided to listen to Episode 1.  The original plan was to listen to an episode a day.  As soon as we started listening we were hooked and could not stop.  We had an appointment later that afternoon and we took the CD as well as the next one with us so we could continue our listening adventure.

Each episode has a follow up link on the website with more background information on the missionary story featured along with links to organizations and pictures of the actual events represented in the episode.  You can see these pages by following the links below.

Ep. 01 - The Mystery Ring
Ep. 02 - Blue Hat and T-Shirt Bible
Ep. 03 - How Big Is Your God Pt. 1
Ep. 04 - How Big Is Your God Pt. 2
Ep. 05 - Mexico By Bus
      Ep. 06 - Treehouse Academy
Ep. 07 - Pirates of Mayan Island
      Ep. 08 - Sapphire Slave Pt. 1*
      Ep. 09 - Sapphire Slaves Pt. 2*
      Ep. 10 - Hadi's Choice
Ep. 11 - Castle of Secrets
Ep. 12 - On the Run

Each and every episode of the Brinkman Adventures is based on real family life.  The missionary stories are all based on actual events of missionary families around the globe.   The names of the missionaries have all been changed to protect their identities.

Each story has scripture and prayer in them and real every day life conversations.  The family pray together and do bible studies together demonstrating how to apply christian principles in daily living.

The dramatizations are excellent and you feel as though you are actually in the country where the story is taking place.

      Cost of Brinkman Adventures
      • Physical 4 CD set at $25 suggested Donation
      • MP3 / iTunes download at $17.00 suggested Donation
The Brinkman Adventures operates on a donation basis. You have the option of choosing your donation value.  ALL proceeds raised go towards funding new episodes and supporting missionaries.

There are two sample episodes available for you to listen to online. Episode #1 is available to listen to at the bottom of the Fun Stuff page and episode #9  The Provider has it's own dedicated page.

You can watch behind the scenes recordings of the family recording the episodes on YouTube.

      Recommended Age Range
These stories are intended for family listening.  Some of the stories are dramatic and some of the themes can be a little frightening for younger students.  If an episode is going to be intense it starts off with a recommendation that parents do listen to the story alongside their children.

      What we thought
We loved listening to The Brinkman Adventures Season 2: Episodes 13-24 so much that we have purchased Season 1 and are looking forward to Season 3. Each and every episode is sit on the edge of your seat anticipation story telling at it's best.

If your family are looking for something to listen to that is encouraging, brings truth and light into the hearts and minds of your children then The Brinkman Adventures is for you! Be warned once you start listening you will not want to stop!

This month Sir N participated in two Lego Challenges.

The first one from LEGO Quest II over at the Canadian Homeschooler.  The theme this past month has been COLOUR!

His first idea was to build a Lego brick.

I loved his second idea based on a Lady Bug.

The second challenge was from Angels of HeartLego Challenge #18 Spring Challenge.

His idea is a tree in blossom with a cat enjoying the sunshine.

We've really been enjoying these challenges.  Thank you to the Canadian Homeschooler and Angels of Heart for these.

A is for answers to questions aplenty
As we ardently argue our aspect, our view
In favour of authentic academic understanding
Aware all have a abundant ability
      Awaiting discovery, its auspicious awakening.

All we need is an abundance of avid application
And alternative learning becomes an adventure
Achieving our goals is delightfully augmented
As we adjust to assimilate weakness and strength
      Always advocating for adaptive education.

An atlas sparks an astounding adventure
An arachnid or antelope, a biological agenda
An apple, an avo', a lesson in nutrition
Alphabetic awareness to appreciate and apply
An astounding array of everyday application.

Ais for answers, but don't be aghast
You don't need to agonize over lacking the knowledge

Last year I felt challenged about whether I was Connected or Disconnected especially after reading How to Miss a Childhood.

A few weeks ago I watched Captivated and was made aware of the impact of smart phone technology on my world at home.  As a result I have been trying to put my phone more on silent and be more present when I'm home alone ... This has been far harder than I thought it would be.  I like being connected ...

This week my mom shared Look Up with me on Facebook.  It's a poem talking about the issues surrounding smart phone use.  Thought provoking.

Here are the words of Look Up for those of you who can't access the YouTube clip.

            Look Up

            I have 422 friends
            Yet I am lonely
I speak to all of them everyday
Yet none of them really know me

The problem I have sits in the spaces between
looking into their eyes or at a name into a screen
I took a step back and opened my eyes
            I looked around and realised

There's media we call social is anything but
When we open up our computers and it's our doors we shut
All this technology we have it's just an illusion
Community companionship a sense of inclusion
yet when you step away from this device of delusion

You awaken to see a world of confusion
A world where we're slaves to technology we mastered
Where information gets sold by some rich greedy b******
A world of self interest  self image self promotion
Where we all share our best bits but leave out the emotion

We're at our most happy when each experience we share
But is it the same if no one is there ?

Be there for your friends and they'll be there too
But no one will be if a group message will do
We edit and exaggerate crave adulation
We pretend not to notice the social isolation

We put our words into order
            Until our lives are glistening
We don't even know if someone is listening

            Being alone isn't the problem
            Let me just emphasize
We read a book, paint a picture or do some exercise
            You're being productive and present
            Not reserved and recluse
You'll be awake and attentive and putting your time to good use

So when you're in public and you start to feel alone
Put your hands behind your head step away from the phone
You don't need to stare at your your menu or your contact list
Just talk to one another learn to co exist

I can't stand to hear the silence of a busy commuter train
where no one wants to talk for the fear of looking insane
            We're becoming unsocial
            it no longer satisfies
to engage with one another and look into someones eyes

We're surrounded by children who since they were born
Have watched us living like robots and think it's the norm.
It's not very likely that you'll make the world's greatest Dad i
f you can't entertain a child without using an iPad.

When I was a child I'd never be home
I'd be out with my friends
on our bikes we would roam
I'd wear holes in my trainers and graze up my knees
We'd build our own club house high up in the trees

Now the park is so quiet that it gives me a chill
            See no children outside
            And the swings hanging still
There's no skipping, no hop scotch
            No church and no steeple

We're a generation of idiots smart phones and dumb people

So look up from your phone
            Shut down the display
            Take in your surroundings
            make the most of today
Just one real connection is all it can take
to show you the difference that being there can make

            Be there in the moment
that she gives you the look
            that you remember forever
            that's when love overtook

the time she first held your hand or first kissed your lips
the time you first disagreed but still loved her to bits
the time you don't have to tell hundreds
            of what you've just done
because you want to share this moment with just this one

The time you sell your computer
so you can buy a ring
for the girl of your dreams who is now the real thing

The time you want to start a family
            and the moment when
you first hold your little girl
and get to fall in love again

The time she keeps you up at night
and all you want is rest
The time you wipe away the tears
as your baby flees the nest
The time your baby girl returns
with her boy for you to hold
The time he calls you grandad
and makes you feel real old
The time you take in all you've made
            just by giving life attention

            And how you're glad
            you didn't waste it
by looking down in some invention

The time you hold your wife's hand
            sit down beside her bed
You tell her that you love her
lay a kiss upon her head.
She then whispers to you quietly
as her heart gives a final beat
That's she's lucky that she got stopped
by that lost boy in the street

But none of these times ever happened
You never had any of this
when you're to busy looking down
You don't see the chances you miss

So look up from your phone
            Shut down those displays
            We have a finite existence
            A set number of days

Don't waste your life getting caught in the net
            As when the end comes
            Nothings worse than regret
I'm guilty too of being part of this machine.

            This digital world
We are heard but not seen
Where we type as we talk
And we read as we chat
            Where we spend hours together
            without making eye contact

So don't give into a life where you follow the hype
Give people your love don't give them you like
Disconnect from the need to be heard and defined
            Go out into the world
            Leave distractions behind.

            Look up from your phone
            Shut down that display
            Stop watching this video
            Live life the real way

A few weeks ago I shared with you my favourite chemistry book - The Elements.  Over the last few years I have developed an interest in Solar Eclipses and Lunar Eclipses. As a result of this I am always on the lookout for books about the universe. This week I discovered a book about the Solar System published by the same company who published The Elements book.

It is a visually stunning book.  You can take a look inside this book over at Amazon. As a christian family we do not believe in the big bang theory of where our universe came from so we skipped that part of the book.

Each part of the system starts off with a double page spread.  On the left page is a full page photograph of the sun, star or planet discussed.  The right hand page has a break down.  It contains a short summary, orbital data, physical data, atmospheric composition, a labeled cross section and a mean density graph.

Following this page is another double page spread of interesting photographs and then some other information about theories and famous scientists through the ages.

This book would make a wonderful gift to anyone who has an interest in the solar system.

Description on Book Depository"In this title, bestselling author Marcus Chown leads us on a grand tour through the incredible diversity of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft that surround the Sun in our cosmic backyard. Illuminating his insightful and surprising text are a wealth of beautiful images and diagrams, printed in full colour, richly detailed and accurately based on real scientific data. A perfect gift for anyone with an interest in astronomy, "The Solar System" allows the imagination to roam free from Mercury to Pluto and beyond."

            This Week
Have you heard of zentangle ? I happened to stumble across it when looking up doodling on YouTube a few weeks ago. This is turn led me to look for FREE patterns online which I discovered at www.TanglePatterns.com After poking around for a while I found Chrissie Murphy Designs which inspired me to take the plunge and start tangling.

I found a small square book and decided to divide the page in four and work my way through the TanglePatterns.com TANGLE GUIDE, 2014 Edition trying out tangles.

I've had so much fun doing Tangle patterns I decided to get Sir N started.  Here is his first attempt at zentangle. He chose to do the 2-N-5 pattern.

Over the last few years I have been refining my home education methods.  We are endeavoring to follow a more delight directed approach along a Charlotte Mason philosophy.  Charlotte Mason encouraged classical composer studies and the listening of great compositions. Personally I have a very limited understanding of classical music and would love to introduce more of this genre of music into our home school.  Last month we were given the opportunity by Maestro Classics to review two of their products Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel  and My Name is Handel: The Story of Water Music.

I am so pleased to have discovered  Maestro Classics. Their aim is to introduce children to classical music through stories. The music on each CD is played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

            What we received

            How we used it
Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
After downloading the MP3 version in a zipped file I burnt it to CD and printed off the PDF to accompany the story.

We have long been fans of Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel Annie. Sir N loves me reading our compendium of books by Virginia Lee Burton.
We grabbed our copy of Mike Mulligan and put the CD on. The CD has seven tracks.
            • The first one was a reading aloud of the book intermingled with beautiful orchestral music.
            • Track two introduced us to the author Virginia Lee Burton. I loved hearing a little more about this interesting lady and how she started writing books for children along with the story behind the story of Mike Mulligan.
            • Track three is the Mike Mulligan Song
            • Track four is about the music the conductor himself (Stephen Simon) explaining why he chose certain instruments and pointing them out in the story
            • Track five some of the music is played again giving us an opportunity to hear the new instruments that we have learned about in the music.
            • Track six and seven is preparation for and a sing along.
I cut and glued the little booklet together. Sir N loved looking through this and trying his hand at the puzzles in them. He is also looking forward to learning to play the short piece of music in the booklet on his recorder.

My Name is Handel: The Story of Water Music

A few months ago we read about the life of Handle and it was interesting to note when I started the CD that Sir N remembered some of the history of who Handle was. The accent of the story teller made for an interesting CD.

After downloading the MP3 version in a zipped file I burnt it to CD and printed off the PDF to accompany the story. I grabbed the CD and we listened to this one in the car as we had a rather busy day out and about. It was really worth listening to a few times as each time we listened to the CD we learned some thing new or became aware of something in the music we had missed the first few times we listened.

            This CD has six tracks.
            • Track one picks up the story of Handles life when he is released by his employer and given a leave of absence for one year to travel to England. It follows his life introducing the children to different aspects of Handle's composing career up until he presents Water Music to the King of England on the river Thames.
            • Track two gives some historical back ground to the music along with some new information.
            • Track three introduces children to a song to help them recognise the music Handle composed.
            • The Maesto gives a lesson about the music in track four explaining concertos, suites, and oratorios.
            • Track five and six is for the children to join in and sing.
            Extra's
I just discovered that they have an amazing Homeschool Music Curriculum guide covering history, science, geography, language arts, art, music and math available for the following CD's: The Soldier's Take, Casey at the Bat, The Tortoise and the Hare, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, The Sorcerer's Apprentice,  Peter and the Wolf and My name is Handel.  We will definitely be exploring all the information and links provided here there is a ton of information!

There are also some fun home projects to attempt. I think that Sir N would definitely enjoy trying his hand at a glass Xylophone.

There are also some Montessori inspired music appreciation guides available for four CD's in the Educational Materials area.

              What we thought
Sir N's thoughts: My favorite part of Handle was when he went up to the king in his boat with his orchestra. The CD was fun to listen to. I enjoyed listening to it very much.
My favourite part on Mike Mulligan is the end when the boy had the idea of turning the steam shovel into a furnace. The music was great and I loved it.

I love the quality of these productions. They are an excellent way to introduce children to classical music. We are looking forward to purchasing more titles from  Maestro Classics and listening to them at home.  A wonderful addition to any classical learning library.

              In my life this week…
Wow life is so empty when two people leave your circle for three days!  Paul and Sir N joined another family for a short trip away this week and left me home alone (well sort of the teens are still here, but they tend themselves).

I'm rather excited!  This coming week we will be getting to use Veritas Grammar School Self-paced History.  We shall be doing Old Testament and Ancient Egypt history.  You can view samples of this curriculum over at Grammar School History - Self Paced Course Samples -

In our home school this week…
              • Three days exploring the great outdoors of western Victoria here in Australia.
              • Started teaching Sir N how to Tangle.
              • Listened to Sir Handel from Maestro Classics.
              • Organised our Logic of English products in a box.
              • We completed our first still life drawing with Graham Braddock
              • Explored more ancient history.

              Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
              • Paul and Sir N went to explore Forrest near the Ottways in Victoria. They enjoyed the peaceful surrounds of In the Long Grass and Sir N and two friends spent a delightful three days exploring the wonders of nature.
              • Music and art lessons
My favourite thing this week was…
              • Being blessed with three days all to myself !
              • So very inspirational.  This is a dance by a couple on YouTube. She lost her right arm at 19 and he lost his left leg at 4.  We have so much to be grateful for.
              • This poem is thought provoking, I shared earlier this week by Gary Turk.  Look Up
              • Eric the homeless man gets a new home for a year.  Love it ♥
              • Love this photo essay seeing what this man does with other people's garbage in order to bless the homeless Amazing!
              Questions/thoughts I have…
              • Some days I really wonder how people can sleep with the choices they make especially the ones that are directly affecting the lives of others.  Here is an interesting article on the Justina Pelletier case this week. Justina Pelletier and the Harvard Web of Empire

Look what arrived in the post this week at our home.  This is a beautiful book.  I have been wanting to incorporate looking at beautiful works of art into our daily routine and as such had been looking for a new book to make it easier for us.

The only negative I have with this book is that it does contain some paintings with graphic nudity.  I had a count of these and found that there are 64 paintings in it that Sir N will not be looking at.  Over all I am not disappointed as there are still 300+ paintings we can enjoy together.

                  • The book is arranged in double paged spread format.
                  • The left page contains a monthly timeline at the bottom with the Month and date, a few lines for you to jot down thoughts or use as a diary, a quote from the featured artist, a miniature of the full painting if only a portion is featured on the opposite page.  The name and year the painting was painted along with an attribution of who the artist is for the featured painting.
                  • The right hand page contains the featured painting.  Most of the paintings are featured in their entirety but a few are cropped in.
                  • There are 366 paintings
                  • The back of the book contains a full list of featured artists arranged in alphabetical order of their surnames followed with the years they lived and the dates in the book that feature their art.
If you are looking at introducing famous works of art into your homeschool this book is worth a look.

Sir N has been reading for a while now but I noticed that sometimes he was just guessing the words in front of him.  I started watching a little more closely and realised that he was memorizing what words looked like and was reading that way.

I know that there are a lot of intensive phonics programs on the market today and wondered which one would be best for him. I needed something that was more remedial phonics based. I did not want something that I would need to take classes in before I taught him.  I was recently introduced to the Essentialsprogram which is produced by Logic of English. This is a full curriculum to help students read, spell and write successfully.

                  What we received
I was super impressed with the quality of the product that arrived at our home. It was well packaged. I received a tracking number when my parcel was dispatched and it arrived here within 10 working days from the USA.

                  How we used it

Essentials program consists of 40 lessons that introduce the 74 Basic Phonograms and 30 Spelling Rules. Students learn thousands of words because they are taught to write compound words and the use of prefixes and suffixes. This basic skill helps them to write any word.

When my box arrived I felt a little overwhelmed by the volume of the contents.  I had been warned about this by fellow crew who had used the Essentials program last year.  I was encouraged to put away all the lovely goodies and to take some time to read all the introduction information in the begining of the the manual and become more familiar with the materials before I started with Sir N.

We started with learning the basic phonogram's. To aid us in mastery Logic of English have provided a YouTube clip. I loved the fact that a full set of Basic Phonogram Flash Cards are provided.  These cards are not small they are 4.5 x 5 inches (11.4 x 12.7 cm) printed on heavy card stock and plastic coated for durability.
On the once side the letter of the alphabet is printed on it's own and on the other side is the three phonetic sounds for A along with examples of the sound in words.  The A is in bold in each word clearly showing the student what is being learned. I like the size of these cards,  they are clear and easy to read and easy to use too.

Top: Blue Bookface Bottom: Red Manuscript
I'm learning more and more that Sir N is a hands on learner.  Personally I am not a hands on learner so looking for things or ideas to help him learn can be very time consuming.  I really appreciate the Phonogram & Spelling Game Book. It is divided into nine chapters.  Each chapter is broken down into games. There are a couple of games that use only one deck of Game Cards otherwise you will need two or three decks.  We have two decks.  We used Blue Bookface and Red Manuscript decks to play with. These cards are 2.25 X 3.5 inches (5.7 x  8.9 cm) and printed on card stock and plastic coated. Each deck contains the 74 basic phonograms and 15 additional cards to enhance game playing. A few of the games also use the Basic Phonogram Flash Cards.
A few of the games are like your traditional Go Fish! and Rotten Egg. There are gross motor games too where you use your whole body or run around the room finding cards etc.   Some of the games are played using the templates supplied in the back of the book such as Tic-Tac-Toe and Phonogram Bingo. We have used the cards to work on ordering them into alphabetical order as well.

For storage I have purchased a small box.  I then took each set of flash cards and used a large foldback clip to keep them together.  The game cards are kept together with an elastic band.  I have a separate group of flashcards clipped together that we are working on with our lesson each week.

The teacher's manual is worth it's weight in GOLD!

There is no way I could teach phonics without this book's support.  It is a step by step tutorial for me too. It contains a full scope and sequence so if you have a child that is stuck on a particular thing you can go here and it will tell you which lesson to go to. Every lesson covers: a set of phonograms,  spelling rules and grammar.
All the Spelling Rules and Grammar rules cards have the rule on one side and and example on the other. The grammar cards are pink and the spelling rule cards are green.

The teachers manual gives you recommendations on how to schedule your lessons depending on the individual needs of your student.  It does not use a one class suits all.  I really like the flexibility and the examples that they provided along with a full detailed step by step tutorials.  We decided to use the half an hour a day schedule.
The BEFORE YOU BEGIN section is invaluable and really helped to lay an acurate foundation for me. It gave me a comprehensive understanding of the phonics program without overwhelming me.  There is also a great list of teacher's resources in this area.

Each lesson is divided into three parts. Part one covers the phonics,  part two covers spelling and part three covers grammar.

The student manual is referenced in the Teachers manual so you always know what to fill in as you work your way through the lesson.  Each aspect of the lesson is applied in the students workbook without being overwhelming.

Last but by no means least is the Spelling Journal.  I have looked at creating a spelling journal / dictionary for Sir N in the past but have never got around to do it.  I am very impressed with this journal.  It is different in that you make your spelling lists according to the spelling rule  and not just the alphabet.  This is a wonderful way of reinforcing what the student is learning.

The Phonogram & Spelling Rule Quick Reference Chart is a very handy tool. This chart is plastic coated for durability and is a concise reference guide to all the phonograms and spelling rules taught in Logic of English.

                    What we thought
I am very impressed with the quality of this product.  Each day we use it I can see an improvement in Sir N's phonic awareness and understanding.  His grasp of the finer details of the English language is improving daily and his confidence is blossoming.

I highly recommend this program for any homeschool family looking for an English phonics program that covers more than just the basics without being overwhelming. The Teacher's Manual is worth it's weight in Gold!

The Blog and YouTube channel is a gold mine as well.  If you are wondering about what to do once you complete the Essentials program you can read What next after Essentials?
