In my life this week…
Wow I can't believe that I have been writing these for a while now.  This is my 100th edition of the HSMJ (Home School Mother's Journal)

I wrote my very first Home School Mother's Journal on the 18 November 2011. Way back then it was hosted by The Homeschool Chick. She sells Homeschool Mother's clothing etc. One day I would really really love to own a I Homeschool! What's your Superpower t-shirt.

From there it was then hosted over at iHomeschool Network.  Last year it moved to So You Call Yourself a Homeschooler and has since been renamed Managing Your Blessings. If you're a homeschool blogger and do a weekly diary I encourage you to link up and share your journey.

I discovered that my most viewed edition was titled HSMJ Being sick is no fun ...  followed closely by HSMJ - Having to Eat My Words.

It's been fun looking over my journey and seeing the things that Sir N and I get up to each week.

In our home school this week…

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
  • It's been a quiet week we have stayed home much of the time.
My favourite thing this week was…
  • Was watching Sir N discover the pleasures of accomplishing his first loom band bracelet.
Things I’m working on…
  • This week I shared about The Logic of English.  If you are reading this post via email please be sure to read the full review online as the complete review did not mail out earlier this week. I am very impressed with this curriculum.
In Bloggy world I’m reading…
I’m grateful for…
    • being able to write this blog and for wonderful friends who encourage me on this journey.

Thank you for sharing the journey with me

Two weeks ago on the Virtual Fridge I shared that we had begun drawing tangles.  I also shared that we had found some FREE online resources.

I continued looking for a book and discovered The Joy of Zentangle.  In this book you will find out what Zentangle is and what it is not, some of the uses,  basics, resources followed by step by step instructions on how to draw 101 tangles.

If you or anyone you know is keen to learn how to tangle this is an excellent beginners resource.

Last week I shared our teddy bear still life drawing.  This week we continued working our way through a Graham Braddock DVD art class.  This picture took us just over two hours to complete.  I am really pleased with the outcome. I think we may try this one again using the outline that is available for download.  The next class is drawing a face.  You can also purchase these as a download or as a DVD set of four DVD's over at Graham Braddock.

Here is Sir N's drawing.  This weeks lesson was a little harder than last weeks.

There are five of us working through the dvd together.  Top row is mine and Sir N's.  Bottom is Mr E who is 8, Miss L who is 9 and Mrs T's drawing.

      Victorian Police Museum {Field Trip}

When I first started blogging one of my goals was to record our trips.  I have been looking over my blog and realised that it's been a long time since I have done this.  I have decided to join in on Field Trip Friday and start recording our trips again.

This past Monday we took a field trip into Melbourne to the Victorian Police Museum. They are open Monday to Friday and entry is via gold coin donation. The Museum is located on the Mezzanine Level of the World Trade Centre.

You are allowed to take photographs inside this museum as long as it's without a flash.

The sky was a beautiful deep autumn blue, it was wonderfully warm and we got to see a lot of the old architecture in the city. My Mom joined us for the trip.

They had two of the armour shields the Ned Kelly gang used on display.  The piece of metal that Sir N is touching is an example of mould board.  This piece weights nine kilograms.  The armour Ned Kelly wore weighed a total of 45 kg.

      Women in the Victoria Police
Top L - Hat with badge for women Bottom
Left Madge O'Conner one of the first police women.
      Right Christine Nixon First Police
      • About the hat and badge: "When Alma Aldersea joined the Police Force in March 1945 women were issued special 'PW' badge numbers rather than the unique individual numbers given to male officers. These numbers could be re-issued to other females when the original owner left the Force as was routinely expected. Alma's badge, PW9, can be seen on this cap. After Alma married and resigned her badge was issued to three more policewomen - the last in 1975." Interestingly if a woman got married she had to resign from the police Force.
      • Madge O'Conner joined the Victoria Police as an agent in 1917 and became a fully sworn in police officer in 1924. It took her seven years.
      • Christine Nixon became the first woman to be appointed as the Chief Commissioner in Victoria.
      • Women had been in the police force since 1917 but it was only in 19743 that the first one was promoted one rank.
Each of the glass cases contain different uniforms and interesting documentation and information about the Police Force over the decades.

Here Sir N takes a look at 'ERIC'.  He was built in 1989 and became the first bomb disposal robot used by the Victorian Police.  He spent 18 years serving the force and went into honourable retirement in 2007.

In the rear of the museum there is an area dedicated to the history of fighting crime in Australia.
      • The first detectives were introduced into the police force in 1844. They wore plain clothes, and operated independently of any uniformed police.
      • Detectives were issued an identification medallion on a  fob-chain.
      • In 1925 three detectives were charged and found guilty of asking for money in exchange for protection.  The presiding judge in handing down his verdict expressed great shock that "a guilty person can buy the silence of the guardians of the law."
      • From the Victorian Police Manual: "A good detective should know the suspects in particular classes of crime, their haunts and associates, especially their intimate male and female associates."
      • "Science is the most efficient and most effective member of the Victorian Police Force ... the one unimpeachable witness." - John Morris, The Argus Weekend Magazine 11 May 1940
      • The Australian Police were slow to adopt forensic investigation. It was pioneered by individual detectives.  Today it is standard practice.
      • You can read all about DNA proofing, fingerprinting, ballistics, etc along the walls.
      • The identification kit called Photo-FIT was developed by Jacques Penry.

Last but not least we were able to try on a police uniform.

It was a lovely day out building memories and exploring together.  I hope to revisit this museum with Sir N when he is in high school so that he can better enjoy all the displays and reading all the interesting historical information.

      Blessings

      In my life this week…

I have started back into my photography class.  This weeks assignment is hard I have to work on spot metering ... Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I feel so very blessed too.  On Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to join a Canon Masters Workshop here in Melbourne courtesy of the Canon Collective.  Be sure to sign up if there is a Collective near you as they arrange many opportunities throughout the year to learn more about different types of photography.  In June they are playing with science in Melbourne.

There were two classes held. We explored wedding photography without the use of flash or touching up in any way.

The first session was hosted by Canon Master Yervant. You can view more photo's from this session on my Facebook.

The second session was hosted by Canon Master Jonas Peterson. You can view more photo's from this session on my Facebook.

          Folk Tales - The Little Red Hen {Poppins Book Nook}

This months theme for the Poppins Book Nook is Folk Tales.  My first thought was what is a folk tale ? It took a little bit of searching but I finally discovered the answer.  I really liked the definition over at wiseGEEK: "A folktale is a type of traditional story that tries to explain something, or which is meant to help people behave well in the world. Such stories usually are fiction-based with magical or supernatural elements, and they often are woven around talking animals, royalty, peasants or mythical creatures. Initially passed down through oral tradition, they were a major means of educating and entertaining prior to the development of printed materials and modern technologies, and they remain instrumental in preserving aspects of the culture in which they develop."

I also discovered a wonderful folk tale resource called World of Tales which shares a multitude of tales but my favorite page is all the Folktales arranged by country.

With this in mind I went looking for some books and settled on The Little Red Hen.

It's been a busy week and this blog is looking a little neglected.  One positive is I found this amazing book at our local library.  It's called How We Make Stuff - The Story Behind our Everyday Things.

          • Format:  Hardback
          • Number of Pages:18 pages
          • ISBN 10: 1848777213
          • ISBN 13: 9781848777217
          • Author Christiane Dorian,
          • IllustratorBeverley Yong
This book is the winner of The English Association 2013 Prize for Non Fiction 7-11 years and it's easy to see why. It is amazing I am so impressed with it.  It is twaddle free and choc full of information. It's a pop up book with tabs to pull and learn and lots of lift up flaps and booklets. Each double page spread answers a question about the way we use the earths natural resources to make things.

          It answers the following questions
          1. Who invented Factories ?
          2. Where do Burgers come from ?
          3. Does Chocolate grow on trees ?
          4. Where do clothes come from ?
          5. How do we turn trees into paper ?
          6. What are rubber ducks made of ?
          7. What is the link between gorillas and mobile phones ?
          8. What does disposable mean ?
          9. What can we learn from other creatures ?
Definitely add this one to your bookshelves your children will spend hours and hours looking through it and learning all sorts of wonderful things.

          Blessings

          Progeny Press ~ Frog and Toad Together {Review}

Over the years I have heard many wonderful things about study guides for books but have never actually used one. When I heard about Progeny Press a Christian Publishing company that produces study guides for literature from a Christian perspective via the crew I just had to give it a try. Their company mission is "To teach our children to think clearly, to understand literature, and to rely on the scripture for truth and values, and enjoy themselves while they do it!"

I am a huge fan of Arnold Lobel's books and so was thrilled to be given a copy of the downloadable Frog and Toad Together - E-Guide to use with Sir N.

          What we received

            The guide consists of
            • Table of Contents
            • Note to the Instructor - a short note about how the guides are to be used.
            • Synopsis -  A short synopsis of the book the guide is based on.
            • About the Author - a synopsis of the life and work of Arnold Lobel
            • Before you read  activities - these questions helped set our attitude before we started reading the book and helped us discover our own perspective about the issues surrounding friendship.
            • Chapter 1 to 5 This covers the five chapters in the book Frog and Toad Together.
            • Venn Diagram and Word Search
            • Suggestions for Further Reading
            • Answer Key
            • List of available study guides from Progeny Press.

            How we used it
I downloaded the guide which arrived in a PDF format (523 KB).  It had a total of 36 pages with a full colour cover.  This PDF is a secured** copy. I printed our copy at home on our printer.

Starting off our study we used the before you read questions to think about friendship. We looked at friendship from two perspectives.  One of ourselves and the other from what we enjoy in our friends. We then took Sir N's bible and had a look at what friendship means from a biblical view from Proverbs. The before you read activity encouraged us to make new friends.

We borrowed Frog and Toad Together (a Newberry Honor book) and Sir N and I took turns reading the stories together. This is a beautiful book illustrating the depth and breadth of friendship in a collection of five adventures that Frog and Toad go on together. Each chapter provides a valuable life lesson for the reader regarding friendship and commitment. After Sir N read the chapter to me I would re-read the chapter to him so he could sit back and enjoy the beautiful illustrations and the sometimes very humorous situations that Frog and Toad find themselves in.

            Chapter 2 Sample question page
We then moved to the table and looked through that chapter's study guide questions.  I wanted Sir N to have the opportunity to think and share with me his thoughts so I was the scribe and reader of the guide to him. From the guide I learned to turn to God's word and dig deeper and draw parallel's to what we were reading and learning. Together we learned to think more clearly about the story we were reading together. This had a benefit as Sir N got to look in his own bible to discover more about what God said on the subject. Each scripture reference was followed with thought provoking questions to help the student dig a little deeper and apply the knowledge of what they had just learned both from the Word of God and the book they had just read.

Sample of digging deeper in scripture questions.

Each chapter was then finished off with a fun hands on activity.  Sir N really enjoyed baking biscuits after reading about the Frog and Toads biscuits. There were recommended memory verses and fun projects for each chapter as well.

**Please note if you are taking a secured PDF to print at Office Works the self service machines can not print these correctly.  The staff are very friendly and will help you to print it from the counter.

              What we thought
Sir N and I both enjoyed our very first literature study guide together.  I enjoyed the digging deeper questions and watching him grasp the impact upon himself of reading a story had on him. He also enjoyed the hands on projects and some of the further reading and listening suggestions at the end of the book.

This guide was easy to use and there was very little preparation work for me the teacher.  I liked how the layout was easy to follow and simple to use.

If you are looking for a study guide to use with your children that digs deeper and goes beyond asking mundane questions like who is the main character and what did they do ? A guide that relies on scripture as the plum line. Progeny Press study guides are your answer.

I look forward to using more guides in the future with Sir N.

              Blessings

It's been one of those weeks two long weeks where everything just takes a long time ... Have you heard about the Willis Clan ?  What an amazing home educating family of 12 children. Music and dance are not optional for this amazing family and it shows.  They have several dance and wrestling titles between them and tour and recently auditioned for America's got talent where they sing their own version of These are a few of my favourite things. They enjoy Irish Dancing.  I have been totally blown away reading each child's biography.

I've managed to leave this a little late and the FIFA World Cup starts in a few days, but as they say better late than never.  Here are some resources I discovered online today when looking for resources about the soccer world cup.

Did you know that the first World Cup Soccer tournament was held in Uruguay on the 13th of July 1930 with 13 teams from around the world. Uruguay was also the first nation to win the World Cup.

The original cup (Jules Rimet Trophy) was stolen and not recovered and the current cup was commissioned in 1974. The World Cup is 36.5 cm tall,  is made of  5 Kg of 18 carat gold and weights 6.175 kg. There has been some speculation about which parts of it are solid gold.  You can watch an interesting YouTube clip about it here: Chemistry of the World Cup Trophy

Although this video clip is from the South African World Cup I wanted to finish up with it because it's so much fun to watch: Animals Playing Soccer.

He is smart funny and climbs into your heart as you read the book or listen to the audio version.  We have laughed at his antics and felt sorry for him in his pain and admired his gentle heart.  We have learned life lessons from Dewey about friendship, love and commitment. It's a beautiful story of being lost and found and discovering your place in the world.

Laura Hamilton is an amazing artist and does an excellent job in reading the book to the audience.  Her personification of the different characters through out the book keeps you wanting to listen to more.

Vicki Myron uses excellent vocabulary and keeps you attentive and  spellbound to Dewey's antics.

Do you value "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle ... "

"The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world."  How often do we hear these words?  Often enough for them to totally loose their impact. As a full time stay at home Mom it's so easy to loose sight of the true value of our positions.

Last night I joined a group of five mom's for a night out to see Mom's Night Out. It was a gentle nudging reminder that "I am His master piece and that is enough."

"You all spend so much time beating yourselves up it must be exhausting. Let me tell you something Girl.  I doubt the good Lord made a mistake giving your kiddo's the Mama He did. So you just be you, He'll take care of the rest." - Bones (Mom's Night Out)

The movie scene of Ally & Bones was the scene of the movie that hit home the truth of the depth of the Father's love for us Mom's and just how much time we loose each day in beating ourselves up.  He finishes up saying "It's a beautiful thing to watch one of God's creation just doing what He made it to do. Just being ... and that's enough." - Bones.

Think about it.  It's a beautiful thing to watch something just being what it was created to be and do.  We do not need to be like the Mom next door or on the next blog.  We need to be who we are.  Just be. It's only hard work to be something you're not ...

Mama take some time to really BE who you are.  Rest in who you are and who He created you to BE.  Stop striving to BE someone else you will never succeed.

You can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens you.  In Him you live and move and have your being.

Be blessed and enjoy BEING who He made you Mama and the children whom He blessed you with.

After the movie last night we looked up the words for The Hand That Rocks The Cradle and were impressed with the poem it's from.

                    Artist Rudolf Schweitzer-Cumpana
The Hand that rocks the Cradle
Is The Hand That Rules The World
Blessings on the hand of women!
Angels guard its strength and grace,
                    In the palace, cottage, hovel,
                    Oh, no matter where the place;
Would that never storms assailed it,
                    Rainbows ever gently curled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.

                    Infancy's the tender fountain,
                    Power may with beauty flow,
Mother's first to guide the streamlets,
                    From them souls unresting grow--
Grow on for the good or evil,
                    Sunshine streamed or evil hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.

                    Woman, how divine your mission
                    Here upon our natal sod!
Keep, oh, keep the young heart open
Always to the breath of God!
All true trophies of the ages
                    Are from mother-love impearled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.

Blessings on the hand of women!
                    Fathers, sons, and daughters cry,
And the sacred song is mingled
With the worship in the sky--
                    Mingles where no tempest darkens,
                    Rainbows evermore are hurled;
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.

I have had a busy week this week with driving my first born to interviews for possible IT apprenticeships. Please keep him in your prayers that the Lord would open up a door for him ...

I learned so much this week

Then today we attended a second Collective event and learned to shoot in manual mode with our cameras.  You can see more results of this on my two Instagram accounts Chareenr and Macro_Passion

Thanks to a friends excellent 10 cent library purchase Paul and Sir N have been enjoying Toad Heaven.  All I have heard for the past three days are gales of laughter and giggles of delight as they've met Limpy and his family.  Limpy is a cane toad living in Queensland Australia. Cane toads are vermin here in Australia and so their antics with the humans are really funny to read.  Limpy is the slightly squashed cane toad and the hero of the story.  In this book he is in search of a nature reserve for him and his friends.  For some reason nothing ever seems to go to play for the delightful trio.  This book definitely appeals to boy humour and is perfect for reading ages 8-10.

There are a total of four books in the series
                        1. Toad Rage
                        2. Toad Heaven
                        3. Toad Away

                        This Week
We have slowly been working our way through a video art class by Graham Braddock called Real Drawing for Kids!  So far we have completed a still life drawing and a drawing of a kitten.  I so wish I had had art class by this gentleman when I was at school.  He has the most amazing way of explaining how to draw and place the parts of your pictures onto the page.  I highly recommend his art classes if you can attend them but if not you can purchase a three class DVD series from him.You can also purchase these as a download. We decided to use a layout guide for the portrait class and will be reattempting this class next year when the students are a little older.

This months theme for the Poppins Book Nook is The Great Outdoors. Winter has finally arrived in Melbourne and the cold has well and truly set in making us rather loath to enjoy the great outdoors.  The one thing I truly enjoy about books is they have the ability to take you places without leaving the comfort of your home.

This month we have chosen to enjoy a few books on nature.  We have enjoyed The Burgess Bird Book for Children and focusing on  The Berenstain Bears Nature Guide (Almost everything small bears and kids need to know about... the animals, the plants, the earth itself, with actual facts about frogs, possums, birds, fish, trees, rocks, lady bugs, earthquakes ... and lots more).  This is part of our The Berenstein Bears Big Book of Science and Nature book. We have also enjoyed The year at Maple Hill Farm.

This month I have been inspired once again to start Nature Journaling and so Sir N and I are preparing to make journals.  We have gone on a few field trips and taken photographs to capture the beauty around us.  It's amazing to see what is out there even in the middle of winter.  We have been sharing our pictures on Instagram.  Our accounts are:  Macro_Passion and Explorer Pugsley.

We took some time to explore the zoo and Sir N took this beautiful photograph of the serval there which was featured on the Zoo Facebook page.
